We aim to help, support and maintain the school. This means helping to meet ongoing running costs of approximately £4,000 per year as well as some larger sums to provide major enhancements like a kitchen, extended toilet facilities, library and play area.
What and How?
We plan to raise sufficient funds so that the school can operate smoothly and efficiently.
Teachers
There were no wages for the teaching staff but since August 2007 they have received a nominal payment each month. We aim to raise enough funds to pay the teachers the correct monthly wage.
The teacher training programme with Brikama Teacher Training college will commence as soon as the teachers are ready. This will run for three years during the school holidays, totalling 42 weeks of training.
At the moment there are only 2 male teachers within the school and a female teaching assistant. As and when we have the funds to expand the school we will employ more teaching staff
School Buildings
The school currently provides for over 100 children between the ages of 2 to 6 compared with 20 in 2002. More expansion is expected. As a result we need to expand ,enhance and upgrade the existing facilities.
School Equipment
Children from this particular area of the Gambia are mostly from extremely poor families. In the EU we consider uniforms, pens, pencils, paper and stationary as essentials. Here they simply cannot afford to buy them. More specialist nursery educational material is being provided as a result of the support we receive from Playtime under fives. This means that the families do not have to worry nor struggle in order to raise money. Their minds will be put at ease knowing their children will be getting a good solid education they ordinarily couldn't afford.
